Young at Heart is a group of about 35 parishioners, family members, and friends who join together monthly in fellowship and to share lunch. Most members are retirees. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month, September through June. Annual dues are $5. Every third month the group meets at a local restaurant. All other meetings are pot luck luncheons held in the Social Hall. Meetings begin at 11:30.
Generally, guest speakers are invited for the meetings held in the Social Hall. Presentations cover many subjects such as health care, exercise, nutrition conservation, gardening, wills and trusts, national parks, etc. Most often speakers are parishioners.
There is always a door prize or two and 50/50 tickets are sold. Proceeds from dues and 50/50m raffles are used to support community service projects and parish activities.
Young at Heart contributes to the community through the following service projects such as:
The Back Pack Ministry–
Through the Back Pack Ministry, Young at Heart works with other local churches to provide food for needy children attending the Greenfield Elementary School. Food is provided for six to eight weekends during the school year and one full week during the summer. Young at Heart contributes money towards the purchase of the food, picks up back packs, shops for the food, sorts, packs, and delivers the back packs to the schools. In addition, Young at Heart hosts a luncheon for the children during the summer at the Orchard Hills Church. A Bake Sale is held in the Spring to help pay for the food and an additional contribution of $100 is given by the Young at Heart to support this project.
Be a Santa to a Senior Program-
The purchased over 30 gift bags for seniors living alone or at a nursing home facility that would otherwise have had little if anything given to them at Christmas.
The group also makes donations to the Church for altar flowers, Mass intentions, food for Christmas and Easter families and purchases missals for First Communion.
Young at Heart is a great way for new parishioners to get to know other and for others to keep up with each other, enjoy wonderful meals, and to hear interesting speakers.
